IRON DEFICIENCY

Iron deficiency is a condition that affects many women between the ages of 12 and 50. Women of childbearing age are 95 percent more likely than men to become iron deficient.

There are two main reasons women are more prone to iron deficiency. Women lose blood during their monthly period and, subsequently, lose iron. Women typically do not eat enough to get the adequate iron they require.

For these reasons, experts recommend that women not only eat iron rich foods, but that they take an iron supplement. Foods high in iron include liver, beef, soybeans, turnip greens, and iron fortified breakfast cereals.
