GROUNDHOG DAY

Groundhog Day occurs annualy on February 2.

The beginnings of Groundhog Day can be traced to several routes. The Germans tried to predict how long winter would last based on the hibernation patterns of bears. Later, when some of these Germans had migrated to Pennsylvania, they switched from bears to groundhogs.

Groundhog Day may also partly stem from Candlemas Day which was celebrated on Febuary 2.

It is so famous, that even a movie was made from it. Basically how it works is that if the groundhog comes out of its hole and sees its shadow, then we are going to get 40 more days of winter. To see a shadow the sun must be shinning and the groundhog has to look in the correct direction.

The official groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil.
