CLUSTER HEADACHES

Cluster headaches are rare in the population.

There is about 70 persons with cluster headache per population of 100,000.

CLUSTER HEADACHE :

Attacks of severe unilateral pain in the orbit or surrounding areas, or both, lasting 15 to 180 minutes.

Recurring from once every other day to 8 times per day.

One or more of the following symptoms, ipsilateral (on the headache side) conjunctival injection (reddened eyeball), lacrimation (excessive tears from the eye), nasal congestion (stuffy nose), ptosis (lowered upper eyelid), miosis (smaller pupil) and facial sweating.

Attacks occur in series lasting for weeks or months separated by remissions lasting for months or years.

EPISODOC CLUSTER HEADACHE :

Cluster headache which disappears for over 14 consecutive days after less than one year of repeated attacks.

CHRONIC CLUSTER HEADACHE :

Chronic Cluster Headaches follow 12 months without a remission.

Chronic clusters run continuously without any "remission" periods between cycles.

The NHF reports that approximately 20% of cluster sufferers may have attacks that are chronic in nature.
