FLOTATION THERAPY

Flotation Therapy was developed from the early work of Dr. John Lilly who was a neurophysiologist and psychoanalyst. In 1954 he conducted research into how the brain would react when it was denied external stimulation.

He devised flotation tanks which were originally called sensory deprivation chambers. When the therapeutic benifits of these chambers were realized the name was changed to Flotation Therapy.

Flotation Therapy is a way of isolating the mind and body from any external stimuli. This in turn helps produce deep relaxation.

The treatment involves the patient lying in a sound proof tank of water. The water has salts and minerals dissolved into it which enables the body to float.

These days most flotation tanks are installed in health clubs. The tanks measure around 8ft long by 4ft wide.

Generaly most people prefer to float naked. You will be given ear plugs to use.

The flotation takes place in complete darkness. Some flotation tanks may play relaxation tapes or there may be a two way microphone so you may talk to a practitioner.
