Clare Potter

Clare Potter (Clare Meyer) was born in 1904 in New Jersey. Potter studied fashion design at the Art Students League and the Pratt Institute.

Clare started work for Edward I. Mayer Inc and eventually became a designer there.

Then in 1930, Potter gained work as a designer for Charles W. Nudelman Inc. in New York.

Potter is one several designers credited with inventing American sportswear. In 1937, Clare won the Lord and Taylor womens sportswear award. In 1939, she was awarded with a fashion award from the Neiman-Marcus store. Potter was awarded the prestigious Coty Award for American designers in 1946.

In 1948, she launched a ready-to-wear company called, Timbertop, with Martha Stout. In the 1960's, Potter founded a wholesale company in New York. Clare Potter passed away in 1999.
