Derek Lam was born in 1967 in San Francisco.
Lam graduated from the Parsons School of Design in 1990.
Derek gained experience in the fashion world working as a designer for Michael Kors and in Hong Kong.
Lam founded his own label in 2003 and debuted at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2003.
Lam won the CFDA Perry Ellis Swarovski Award for new designers in 2005.
