Dorothy Jeakins

Dorothy Jeakins was born in 1914 in California. Jeakins attended Fairfax High School where she was offered a scholarship to study at the Otis Art Institute (now Otis College of Art and Design).

Dorothy got her first work as a Disney artist during the 1930s. She then gained a job as a fashion illustrator for I. Magnin's department store.

After being spotted by director Victor Fleming, Jeakins was hired as a sketch artist for the movie, Joan of Arc (1948). Jeakins was awarded an Oscar for her work.

Dorothy went on to win another two Oscars, for Samson and Delilah (1949, shared with Edith Head and others), and The Night of the Iguana (1964), as well as another 12 nominations.

From 1953, Jeakins served as the designer for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Company. Dorothy Jeakins passed away in 1995.
