Founded in 1894, by Michael Marks and Tom Spence.
Early items were mainly Bloomers and Camisoles.
Marks and Spencer made their reputation in the 20th century witha policy of only selling British-made goods.
Long term relationships with British manufacturers were entered into and sold the goods under the "St Michael" brand (trademark registered in 1928).
The company expanded overseas in the 1970s.
In 1975, they opened stores in continental Europe.
By late 1990s, there were more then 500 Marks and Spencer stores worldwide.
