John Bates was born in Northumberland, England.
He originally started designing under the name "Jean Varon."
In the 1950s Bates joined the Herbert Siddon design group in London.
In 1961 Bates joined Jean Varon.
Bates opened under his own brand name in 1980.
He became well known for designs that were often very daring, including see-through PVC or mesh dresses.
