Laura Ashley Biography

Laura Ashley was born 1925 in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, United Kingdom. She was educated at Marshalls School in Merthyr Tydfil, then the Elmwood School in Croydon, and then to Wales where she attended the Aberdare Secretarial School. During World War II, Laura served in the Women's Royal Naval Service.

Ashley was a self-taught designer. Laura originally started out designing napkins, table mats and tea-towels.

Formed company with her husband in 1953. Ashley started to print Head Scarves. In 1961 she moved to Wales. In 1968, The first shop under the Laura Ashley name opened in South Kensington.

Her work was characterized by a romantic style and the use of natural fabrics.

Laura Ashley Died in 1985.
