Barbara Hulanicki

Barbara Hulanicki was born in 1936 in Palestine. In 1948, Barbara moved to England where she studied at the Brighton Art College in Sussex.

In 1955, Hulanicki won a London Evening Standard competition for beachwear. From there Hulanicki started her fashion career as a freelance fashion illustrator, doing work for various magazines, including Vogue, Tatler and Women's Wear Daily.

Hulanicki sold her first designs via a mail-order business. In 1964, Barbara and her husband opened a Boutique in London's Kensington area called, BIBA.

The shop soon became famous and was a hangout for artists, film stars and rock musicians.

The Biba shop closed its doors in 1976 but reopened in the 1990`s.
