Rudolph Gernreich

Rudolph Gernreich was born in 1922 in Vienna, Austria. In his youth, Rudolph worked in a dress shop owned by his aunt.

In 1938, Gernreich immigrated to the United States where he was eventually naturalized in 1943.

Rudolph studied at Los Angeles City College and then the Los Angeles Art Center School. After finishing his study, Gernreich was a costume designer for the Lester Horton Company.

From 1948, Gernreich worked as a freelance fashion designer before forming a partnership with manufacturer Walter Bass to supply clothes to Los Angeles boutique, Jax.

In 1960, he founded his own company G.R. Designs Inc. which in 1964 was named Rudi Gernreich Inc. He gained much publicity in 1964 with his Topless Bathing Suit. In 1985, Rudi Gernreich passed away.
