James Galanos was born in 1924 in Philadelphia, United States.
Galanos attended and graduated from the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York.
After graduating, James sold fashion sketches to New York designers.
Galanos then worked for Hattie Carnegie in New York.
He then worked for Columbia Studios in California.
Galanos did a one-year apprenticeship in Paris with Piguet in 1947.
In 1952, Galanos finally presented his first collection under his own name.
He also founded a showroom in New York.
Galanos was awarded the Coty Fashion Award in 1954 and 1956, and inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame in 1959.
In 1985, James was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award in 1985.
Galanos retired in 1998.
