Gianfranco Ferre

Gianfranco Ferre was born in Legnano, Italy in 1944. Ferre studied at the Politecnico di Milano university where he received a degree in architecture. While at University, Gianfranco supported himself by making belts.

After University, Ferre was a designer of jewellery for Walter Albini, and also did some freelance designing for Lagerfeld and Fiorucci.

In 1974, Ferre founded his own company, Baila. Ferre became a professor of Fashion at the Domus Academy in Milan, Italy in 1983. He became the Stylistic Director of Christian Dior in Paris in 1989.

Ferré passed away on June 17, 2007.

Ferré won a number of awards including:
Occhio d'Oro Award (six times) for Best Italian Designer
Gold Medal from the City of Milan
Commendatore del Ordine decoration from the President of the Italian Republic
De d'Or (Golden Thimble Award) for his first Dior haute couture collection (1989).
