Liz Claiborne

Liz Claiborne was born in Brussels, March 31, 1929. Liz studied at the Fine Arts School and Painter's Studio, in Belgium, then later at the Nice Academy in France.

In 1949, her sketch for a womans coat won a Jacques Heim design competition that was sponsored by Harper's Bazaar magazine. Claiborne eventually gained employment in New Tork, first for Tina Leser, then for Omar Kiam.

From 1955 to 1960 Claiborne designed dresses for the Dan Keller company. Then from 1960 to 1975, Claiborne was principal designer for the Youth Guild, the junior dress division of Jonathan Logan.

In 1976, she finally founded her own company, Liz Claiborne, Inc. Sales in the first year alone were over $2 million. In 1981, Liz Claiborne Inc. went public and had made the Fortune 500 by 1986.
