Azzedine Alaia Biography

Azzedine Alaia was born in Tunisia, in 1940. Alaia attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Tunis, where he studied sculpture.

Alaia moved to Paris in 1957, and worked in fashion design under Guy Laroche and Thierry Mugler.

By 1980 Azzedine had produced his first ready-to-wear line. He voted Best Designer of the Year by the French Ministry of Culture.

Alaia went on to open boutiques in New York, and Paris and supplied designs for the famous. In 1992, Alaia launched a new fabric with anti-stretch properties called "Relax". In 2000, Prada bought Alaias label.
