George Wishart Biography

George Wishart was born probably in 1513, in Scotland. Much of his early life remains uncertain. George attended the University of Leuven, and graduated in 1531. Wishart went on then to teach the New Testament in Greek as schoolmaster at Montrose.

In 1538, Wishart was forced to flee Scotland to escape charges of heresy. He went to England, where the following year Wishart faced charges again.

In 1542, Wishart attended Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he both studied and was a teacher.

Wishart returned to Scotland in 1543. He then travelled Scotland preaching. But, in December 1545, he was arrested on the orders of Cardinal Beaton.

On March 1, 1546, Wishart was executed by being burnt alive at the stake at St Andrews. On May 29, his followers murdered Beaton in retaliation. The Martyrs Memorial at St Andrews was erected in honour of George Wishart other martyrs of the Reformation era.
