Raul Castro Biography

Raul Castro Ruz was born June 3, 1931 in Cuba. He has two brothers and three sisters. Raul was expelled from his first school and then later attended the Jesuit School of Colegio Dolores in Santiago and Colegio de Belén in Havana.

Castro was an active member of the the Socialist Youth. Raul spent 22 months in jail after he was part of a group that attacked the Moncada Barracks. During his exile in Mexico, he participated in the preparations of the expedition of the ship Granma, embarking for Cuba on December 2, 1956. During this period in Mexico, Raúl established conections with Soviet KGB agent Nikolai Leonov. Castro also befriended Ernesto "Ché" Guevara.

Raul fought with older brother Fidel during the 1950s to overthrow dictator Fulgencio Batista and free Cuba. In 1962, Raul Castro was appointed deputy prime minister. In 1972, he was appointed first deputy prime minister.

Raul Castro is married to Vilma Espin Guillois. They have four children together.
