Martin Luther Biography

Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483, in Eisleben, Germany. Luther was baptized the very next morning after his birth, on the feast day of St. Martin of Tours.

In 1484, his family moved to Mansfeld. Martin attended schools in Mansfeld and Magdeburg and then in Eisenach. In 1501, Luther entered the University of Erfurt. Martin received a B.A. in 1502, and an M.A. in 1505.

On July 17, 1505, Luther joined the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt. Martin was ordained to the priesthood in 1507. In 1508, Luther started teaching theology at the University of Wittenberg.

In 1508, Martin received a Bachelors degree in biblical studies and another Bachelors degree in the Sentences by Peter Lombard in 1509. Luther was awarded his Doctor of Theology, on October 19, 1512.

On 31, October 1517 Luther wrote to Albert, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, protesting the sale of indulgences in his episcopal territories. He enclosed the 95 Theses, a copy of which, Luther posted the same day on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg.

Luther had accused the Roman Catholic church of heresy upon heresy. Lutherís 95 Theses of Contention were copied and published across Europe.

Martin Luther was the first person to translate and publish the Bible in German.

Martin Luther died February 18, 1546. He was buried in the Castle Church in Wittenberg, beneath the pulpit.
