John Knox Biography

John Knox was born in 1514. There is not much about his early life with both his birthplace and education uncertain.

The first mention of Knox as a priest is in 1540. A notarial instrument signed by him as a priest is still in existence. It is dated 27 March 1543, and is kept in the charter-room at Tyninghame Castle.

In 1545, Knox first publicly professed the Protestant faith. John Knox became good friends with George Wishart, and acted as his bodygaurd. Later, Wishart wastried for heresy and burnt at the stake.

Knox eventually become a Protestant minister in St Andrews. St. Andrews became a place of refuge for many Scottish Protestants before it was attacked by the Catholics. Knox was captured and spent 18 months as a gallery slave.

Knox was eventually rescued after intervention of the English government. He went to work in England as a Minister of the Church of England.

In 1559, Knox returned to Scotland. And by 1560, John Knox led the Parliament of Scotland to embrace the Reformation in 1560 and the Church of Scotland was reformed along Presbyterian lines.

John Knox died in Edinburgh on November 24, 1572.
