Leonid Brezhnev was born on December 19, 1906 in Kamenskoye, Ukraine.

Brezhnev worked as a political commissar attached to the armed forces during World War II. Leonid attained the Rank of Major General in 1944.

Brezhnev served as the Communist Party Chief in Moldavia from 1950-53, and Kazakhstan from 1954-56.

Brezhnev became the Head of the Communist Party from 1964. In 1977, he became Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.

During the leadership of Leonid Brezhnev the Soviet Union became the world's largest producer of oil and steel. He embarked on a massive programme that built millions of apartments for families to live. Leonid Brezhnev died on November 10, 1982.
