William Booth Biography

William Booth was born April 10, 1829 in Nottingham, England. During his early childhood, his family was considerec wealthy, but after some bad investments they lost everything and at only 13 years of age, William was apprenticed to a pawnbroker.

Mostly self taught, William went on to become a Methodist lay preacher. In 1849, Booth moved to London and found work in a pawnbroker shop.

In 1851, Booth joined the Reformers (Wesleyan Reform Union), and went on to become a full-time preacher. In 1855, William Booth married Catherine Mumford. They eventually had eight children together.

In 1865, Booth and Catherine opened The Christian Revival Society in London. In 1878, the name was changed to The Salvation Army.

Booth established the Salvation Army in 58 countries and colonies during his life.

William Booth died August 20, 1912 in London. During his life, Booth wrote and published a number of books. He also composed several songs.
