Sir John Barrow was born on June 19, 1764, at Dragley Beck, Ulverston, Cumbria.
John studied at Town Bank School.
Barrow then worked in an iron foundry as a clerk.
He was part of a whaling expedition to Greenland at only 16 years old.
In 1792, Barrow joined an expedition to China.
Here he learnt how to speak mandarin Chinese.
Barrow drew Maps and published a review of his travels to South Africa in 1797.
He later did diplomatic work in the Cape of Good Hope.
John Barrow served as second secretary to the Admiralty from 1804 - 1845.
Sir John Barrow died on November 23, 1848, in London.
John is buried at St. Martin's in the Fields, Camden Town.
Cape Barrow, Barrow Strait and Point Barrow, were all named in his honour.
In 1930, John Barrow was a founder member of the foundation of the Royal Geographical Society.
