Dobermanns as we know the breed today is comparatively modern. One man is credited with its origin, Herr Louis Dobermann.
The breed was originally known as Thueringer Pinscher or Polizeilicher Soldatenhund (Police or Soldier Dog.) In 1899 the breed was officially named the Dobermannpinscher and kept this name until after World War II, when the Pinscher part was dropped in 1949.
Dobermans are intelligent, protective, loyal and obedient. The colours are of black/tan, black/brown, black/rust, brown/rust, red/rust.
With a high level of alertness Dobermans make the best guard dogs. Dobermanns are easily trained, as long as they know who is boss. They tend to be like pack dogs who follow a certain leader.
They both give and expect loyalty.
Dobermanns are also renowned for their shrewdness.
