KETONE BODIES

Ketone Bodies are chemicals that the body makes when there is not enough insulin in the blood and it must break down fat for its energy. The three ketone bodies are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone, although beta-hydroxybutyrate is not technically a ketone but a carboxylic acid.

Ketone bodies can poison and even kill body cells.

When the body does not have the help of insulin, the Ketone Bodies build up in the blood and then "spill" over into the urine so that the body can get rid of them.

The body can also rid itself of one type of ketone, called acetone, through the lungs.

This gives the breath a fruity odor.

Ketone Bodies that builds up in the body for a long time lead to serious illness and coma.

KETONE BODIES can also be used for energy:
Ketone bodies are transported from the liver to other tissues, where acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate can be reconverted to acetyl-CoA to produce energy, via the Krebs cycle. The heart gets much of its energy from ketone bodies, although it also uses fatty acids. The brain gets its energy from ketone bodies when insufficient glucose is available
