Diabetes Hypoglycaemia is a word which means low blood sugar level and is often referred to as "hypo".
A "hypo" occurs when blood sugar drops below the normal range which is between 3.5 and 7 mmol/L.
Hypo only occurs in people treated with insulin, but not if diabetes is treated with diet.
The level at which this occurs varies from person to person.
Symptoms may appear quickly or over several minutes.
As blood glucose levels fall the early warning symptoms are felt.
There are basically two types of symptoms.
The first is when there is not enough glucose for the brain to function properly.
This usually includes confussion, irritability or headaches.
Adrenaline related symptoms are sweating, shaking and tremblimg.
Some reasons for a low blood glucose level are :
Missing a meal or not enough carbohydrate in the meal.
Too much insulin.
Drinking alcohol without food.
More rapid absorption of insulin.
Hypo can not always be avoided but planning and prevention help the person to manage the "hypo" more effective.
