The name Collie comes from the Anglo Saxon word Col.
Collies are family oriented dogs and go well with children.
Collies should not never be tied up or chained.
This is because Collies are a herding dog they are able to run up to 40 miles a day.
Collie are also able to jump a 4 to 5 foot fence.
Collies are car chasers and as such you should be very carefull to have your Collie on a lead anywhere near a road.
The rough collie originated in the British Isles.
In the early 1800s breeding of Rough Collies was encouraged.
Top breeders sent stock to Collie fanciers in the United States who paid large sums for the dogs.
As show dogs the Collies history dates back to 1860 when at Birmingham a class was included for sheepdogs.
From there on classes for herding dogs were divided into three categories -"Rough Collies", "Smooth coated" and "Short tailed".
