Volkswagen Car History

Volkswagen or VW or Beetle, as it is often called is a German car that has become the best selling car in history. The car was designed by Ferdinand Porsche. The volkswagen was to become the people`s car. Originally, the car was called the KdF-Wagen, but after world war two, the company was named Volkswagen by the British who had taken control. A new city and factory was purpose-built for production of the car. But only a few were built before world war two broke out. During the war, production changed to military vehicles and the factory was heavily bombed.

After the war, the British took control of the company and renamed it to Volkswagen. Originally, the British intended confiscate the equipment as war reparations. Short of light transport, the British Army placed an order for 20,000 Volkswagen cars.

By 1949, the company had been formed as a trust under the control of the West German government. In 1949, Volkswagen cars started sekking in the United States. By 1973, production of the Volkswagen car had exceeded 16 million.

In 1974, production of the Beetle at the Wolfsburg factory switched to the VW Golf. During the 1990`s, sales started to drop off badly.
