British Leyland History

The British Leyland Motor Corporation was founded in 1968 in the United Kingdom. The new company had been created after the merger of British Motor Holdings and Leyland Motor Corporation.

During its peak, British Leyland owned some 40 different manufacturing plants across the United Kingdom. British Leyland was forced into bankruptcy in 1975 as a result of extremist trade unions.

After an enquiry, British Leyland was restructed wit the government becoming the major shareholder. In 1986 it changed its name to the Rover Group. In 1988 Rover Group was sold to British Aerospace (BAe).
