Land Rover Car History

The term Land Rover originally referred to a specific vehicle which was a civilian all-terrain utility launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show, on April 30, 1948. It was only later, that it was used as a brand for several distinct four-wheel drive models. Land Rover originally starting out as an internal division of Rover. The first Land Rover was designed by Maurice Wilks in 1947. A distinctive feature of the bodies was that it was constructed using a lightweight rustproof proprietary alloy of aluminium and magnesium called Birmabright.

In 1976 the one millionth Land Rover was produced. Land Rover has had a number of owners, including British Leyland, British Aerospace, BMW and the Premier Automotive Group, a division of the Ford Motor Company.
