WILLIAM COLGATE BIOGRAPHY

William Colgate was born in 1783, in Kent, England. In 1798, his family migrated to the United States.

William learned candlemaking and in 1806, he opened a tallow factory in New York. He later moved the factory to Jersey City. Married Mary Gilbert in 1811.

By 1850, Colgate had started producing fancy soaps and toilet preparations.

William Colgatedied in New York in 1857. Colgate was a devout baptist.
