James Callaghan Biography

Leonard James Callaghan was born on March 27, 1912, in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Callaghan was educated at a Portsmouth state school. Later, James worked for the Inland Revenue.

During World War 2, Callaghan served in the Royal Navy Patrol Service. In 1945, James won a seat in the general election. He went on to have a very successful political career becoming Prime Minister at age 64 years. Callaghan is the only person to have served in all four of the Great Offices of State: Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary.

James Callaghan died on March 26, 2005.
