BREAST CANCER STAGES

Cancer at stage zero is confined to the lobule or duct of the breast. This is called lobular carcinoma in situ or ductal carcinoma in situ.

These are precancers and have not invaded the surrounding breast tissue. They also may never.

There is a 20 to 25 percent chance of developing future invasive cancer.

Stage One Breast Cancer consists of a small lump which has invaded the breast beyond the lobules or ducts but it has not yet spread to lymph nodes or the other parts of the body.

In stage two breast cancer there is a slightly larger tumor size or there is enlarged lymph nodes which indicate more trouble may be imminent. There is no sign of distant metastases for stage two either.

In stage three breast cancer it is larger than two inches in diameter or it has invaded the chest wall or surrounding skin. Lymph nodes are enlarged.

Tests of the liver, lungs and bones show no concrete cancer on these organs.

In stage four breast cancer the cancer is detectable in other organs.
