BIOGRAPHY OF POET WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT

1794 - 1878

In 1810 he entered Williams College, in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

In 1812 he withdrew from college and entered the study of law.

Admitted to the bar in 1815.

Wrote the first draft of Thanatopsis in 1813 or 1814.

Worked as a lawyer and justice of the peace in Massachusetts.

Moved to New York, and began a career in magazine publishing, first as editor at the New York Review and Atheneum Magazine, then editor-in-chief at the Evening Post.

When Bryant was in his seventies, he completed verse translations of both the Iliad (1870) and the Odyssey (1872) and printed his collected Poems in 1876.

Died in New York, June 12, 1878.
