BIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM ALLINGHAM

Son of a banker.

Entered civil service as a customs officer.

On June 27th, 1847 he met Leigh Hunt and came to write wrote for Leigh Hunt's London Journal.

Between 1850 and 1857 wrote a dozen volumes of poetry.

Many of his poems were sold widely in Ireland as halfpenny broadsheets.

Was granted a civil list pension of £60 in 1864, increased to £100 in 1870.

Retired to London, where he became sub-editor and later editor of Fraser’s Magazine.

Died in London, 18 November 1889.
