BIOGRAPHY OF POET THOMAS HOOD

Born May 23, 1799.

Son of a Scottish bookseller.

Went to Dundee in 1815 to recuperate from poor health, with his father's relatives, where he wrote for the local newspaper.

Later, he was appointed the sub-editor of the London Magazine.

In 1829 he became editor of The Gem.

His major work was "The Song of the Shirt", published anonymously in 1843.

Died May 3, 1845.

Charles Dickens was present at his funeral at Kensal Green Cemetery, London.
