BIOGRAPHY OF POET THOMAS GREY

1716 - 1771

Born in London, the only surviving child.

Educated at Eton and then Cambridge University but also studied law in London.

In 1742 settled in Cambridge, and started writing poetry.

Was the death of Walpole’s cat in 1747 that prompted Gray to write Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat.

His most ambition work was "The Bard", a by-product of his study of Celtic and Nordic mythology.

Offered the position of Poet Laureate but declined it.

Had an interest in Old Norse and Welsh poetry which produced The Fatal Sisters and The Descent of Odin (1768).
