BIOGRAPHY OF GREEK POET SAPPHO

Born 612 B.C. on the island of Lesbos, Mytiline.

Married Cercylas, a very prosperous merchant.

Had one daughter whom she named Cleis.

Studied the arts on the isle of Lesbos.

She was exiled for a time as a result of certain political activities in her family.

She wrote her poems to be performed with the accompaniement of a lyre.

Was one of the first few poets to write in the first person.

The words, lesbian and sapphic, have derived from her.

Plato also elevated her from the status of a great lyric poet to the "tenth muse".
