GEORGE ORWELL BIOGRAPHY

George Orwell was born June 25, 1903, in Motohari, India. At age of one, he went to live in England with his mother. George Orwell was in fact the "pen name" of Eric Blair.

His education started at a Anglican parish school in Henley. Later George attended St Cyprian's School, in Eastbourne, Sussex. Orwell was then able to earn a scholarship to both Wellington and Eton colleges. He did a term at Wellington. But then George shifted to Eton. He was a King's Scholar from 1917-1921.

For awhile Orwell worked in a secondhand bookshop in Hampstead. During his early years, Orwell spent 7 years working for the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. Then, in 1936, Orwell fought in the Spanish civil war.

Orwell was a member of the Home Gaurd during World War II. George started work for the BBC Eastern Service in 1941. But he resigned in 1943.

George Orwell published his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, in 1933. But, it was in 1945 that he published the classic, "Animal Farm". While staying on the island of Jura, Orwell wrote "Nineteen Eighty-Four".

George Orwell died on January 21, 1950. Orwell was interred in the All Saints Churchyard in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire.
