BIOGRAPHY OF CECIL FRANCES ALEXANDER

1818 - 1895

British hymn writer.

Cecil Frances Humphreys began writing poetry at the age of nine.

Her Verses for Holy Seasons 1846 was followed by the immensely popular Hymns for Little Children 1848.

The collection contained such hymns as 'All things bright and beautiful', 'Once in Royal David's city', 'Jesus guides us o'er the tumult' and 'There is a green hill far away'.

In 1850 she married the Rev. William Alexander.

Mrs Alexander published seven more volumes of poetry, mostly devotional but also including musical verse. and Irish historical ballads.

She also contributed to leading contemporary magazines.

She died in the Bishop's Palace, Londonderry.
