SAIGO TAKAMORI

Saigo Takamori: 1828-77.

Takamori was an opponent of the Tokugawa shogunate and was exiled from 1859 to 1864. But he returned to train the Satsuma warriors and Saigo Takamori supported the emperor in the Meiji Restoration, to later become a Imperial Adviser. Takamori retired from the government after his advice was rejected.

Many Samurai united under Takamori Saigo. Takamori and his small army of 20,000 fought the Goverment troops of 60,000. On September 24, 1877, Saigo Takamori was wounded and committed suicide in Samurai tradition.

Years later, Saigo Takamori was pardoned posthumously and honoured as a national hero in Japan.
