Sir Joseph Lockyer was born May 17, 1836, in Warwickshire, England.
Lockyer is acclaimed for discovering the gas "helium", along with French scientist Pierre Janssen.
Lockyer also served as director of the solar physics observatory in Kensington London.
A crater on the Moon and on Mars are named in his honour.
