Heinrich Hofmann

Born: Darmstadt, Germany, 1824. Hofmann received his first lessons in art from the copper engraver Ernst Rauch in Darmstadt. Then, in 1842, he entered the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf.

Studied in Dusseldorf and the Antwerp Academy.

Resided in Italy from 1854-58.

Later, he moved to Dresden where he became professor of art in the academy.

Much of his work is around scenes from the life of Christ.

Hofmann died in 1902. Heinrich Hofmann was one of the pre-eminent painters of his time. The Sunday Strand at that time a very popular British magazine describes him as the most influential contemporary German painter.
