At 13 he went to London to study.
Thomas worked as an assistant to Hubert Gravelot, a French painter.
He married Margaret Burr in 1746.
In many of his early landscapes, there is influence of Rococo design.
In 1759 he moved to Bath.
The first notice of his work appeared in the London press In 1762.
Throughout the 1760s he exhibited regularly in London.
In 1768 he was elected a foundation member of the "Royal Academy".
He moved to London In 1774.
Commissioned to paint the King and Queen In 1781.
He died in 1788 and was buried in Kew churchyard.
