William Powell Frith

William Powell Frith: Born: Alfield, 1819, USA.

Studied art at Saint Margaret's School.

Later, he attended the Henry Sass Academy in London.

Frith started his career as a portrait painter and first exhibited at the British Institution in 1838. In the 1840s he often based works on the literary output of writers such as Charles Dickens, whose portrait he painted, and Laurence Sterne. Appointed an associate of the Royal Academy in 1845, then made a full member in 1853.

Died in 1909.
