Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, Vinci, Italy. His full birth name was "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci". However, Leonardo had no surname as we know it in the in the modern sense because "da Vinci" simply means "from Vinci in Italy". The family shifted to Florence in the mid-1460s and Leonardo recived the best education.

At around 15 he was apprenticed to the renowned workshop of Andrea del Verrochio in Florence.

Leonardo stayed in the Verrocchio workshop until 1477. In Verrocchio's Baptism of Christ, the kneeling angel at the left of the painting is by Leonardo.

Leonardo entered the service of the Duke of Milan in 1482.

He lived 17 years in Milan.

From 1485 to 1490, Leonardo produced studies on geometry, mechanics, municipal construction, flying machines, canals and architecture.

Between 1490 and 1495 he recorded his studies in illustrated notebooks. Da Vinci was a genius who was generations ahead of his time making notes on future inventions such as sola power, the helicopter, tank and the calculater. Da Vinci made great advances of knowledge in the fields of anatomy, astronomy, civil engineering, optics, and hydrodynamics.

Around 1503 Leonardo began work on the "Mona Lisa." Da Vinciis best known for his realistic paintings, the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

Leonardo died May 2, 1519, Cloux, France. According to his wish, 60 beggars followed his casket. Leonardo Da Vinci was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert in the castle of Amboise. Da Vinci has often been described as the archetype of the "Renaissance man". In 1550, Giorgio Vasari published the first known biography of Leonardo da Vinci.
