Emile Bernard

Emile Bernard: Born: 1868, Lille.

He began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts. He experimented with impressionism and pointillism. In 1881, he moved to Paris.

Registered in the Studio of Cormon.

Well travelled artist. His work showed geometric tendencies which hinted at influences of Paul Cézanne, and he collaborated with Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. His correspondence with these artists is of great art historical interest.

Creator of the "synthetic symbolism".

Dies in Paris, 1941.
