Aikido

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (also known as O-Sensei), in Japan.

Aikido was originally referred to as Aiki bujutsu.

Morihei Ueshiba had studied variuos styles: Jujutsu, judo and kenjutsu. He also studied the spiritual traditions of Buddhism, Shinto, and Omoto-kyo,

Aikido can be said to have progressed through three stages:
1) The "pre-war" period.
2) The "post-war" period.
3) The modern period.

Aikido uses a range of soft techniques that, by matching the opponents movements or balance with a dominant complement, effect a throw or pin. Weapons training in aikido consists of tall staff, wooden sword, and wooden knife. The major styles of aikido each have their own honbu dojo in Japan and were founded by direct students of Morihei Ueshiba.
