AFGHAN DOG

Afghan Hounds existed as far back as 7,000 years ago. In Afghanistan from which the Afghan Hound derives its name the Afghan Hound is a high speed hunter.

In Afghanistan he is still used for hunting large game animals. The Afghan stands from 26 to 28 inches at the withers.

Males weigh approximately 60 pounds. The Afghan can double suspension gallop at speeds of 35 to 40 mph and turn on a dime. Afghans can broad jump 20 feet and can leap 7 feet straight up from a standing position.

With its highly individual personality and its coat which requires regular care and grooming, it is not the breed for all would-be dog owners.

Afghan Hounds require a high level of maintenance. The coat requires daily brushing, weekly bathing and stripping when the coat drops.
